ISO/TS 16949 is the new automotive standard, which many vehicle manufacturers are either requiring or accepting instead of QS-9000, VDA.6, EAQF or AVSQ.
It was jointly developed by the International Automotive task force (IATF), whose vehicle manufacture members include: BMW, Daimler Chrysler, Fiat, Ford, General Motors, PSA Peugeot-Citroen, Renault SA, Volkswagen and their respective trade associations - AIAG (USA), ANFIA (Italy), FIEV (France), SMMT (UK) and VDA (Germany).
Although ISO/TS 16949 does not yet replace existing individual automotive standards, it is set to become the Quality System requirement for the automotive supply chain globally.
ISO/TS 16949 is based on the recently updated quality management standard BS EN ISO 9001 with the overall aim of developing a quality management system that provides for continual improvement, emphasising defect prevention and the reduction of waste in the supply chain.

Companies who adopt this standard early will gain a significant head start over their less proactive competitors.
